On the other hand, while this might alleviate the strain of
weight, it might have some genuinely adverse effects on a
person's technique and embouchure. The Eb clarinet is very
different from Bb soprano in both of these respects. Unless
you're planning on making Eb a regular part of your practice
and performance routine alongside the Bb, I don't recommend
dabbling on it merely as an experiment to combat the effects
of tendinitis. The body needs to make many adjustments when
going from Bb to Eb, and it's best if the two can be practiced
in alternation, such that both sets of conditioned reflexes
develop in tandem. Playing Eb exclusively for a while and then
switching back to Bb might actually foster greater tension
throughout the body as a result of the body's inability to
adapt and re-invoke the "Bb muscles" on command. The weight
ceases to be a factor at that point.
