After sight-reading as an orchestra two nights ago, I have an idea of what
the music will sound like in a 9"X12"X3" cube (a.k.a. the pit) with
several other instrumentalists. As I read through the many notes, there
were a few spots I found tricky -- specifically, the solos in the dream
sequence. From what I can tell, they're all being cued. Are they
supposed to sound... "nasal", for lack of better words? Or should I go
for a darker yet still Klezmer-ish sound? I ask darker because it is a
dark dream sequence. Also, in "To Life", the scene in the bar with the
Russian dancers, it notes in the part, "nasal sounding". Smearing
permittable or should I try for a less smeared sound (I believe the
singers are performing that section -- "ya-da-da-da-di-di,
ya-da-da-da-di-di)? Granted we perform the bottle dance (of course, our
city community theater tends to cut the most interesting parts of musicals
to "make up for time inconsistencies"), how much freedom is allowed on the
clarinet solo? Or should I just review the 1971 release of the musical
700 times?

Thanks, all, for your help. I really appreciate your ideas, comments,
flames for excessive questioning, etc. This is fun music!!!!

Also, if you have any suggestions on becoming more familiar with the style
of Fiddler (besides, of course, relocating to Anatevka), _please_ let me
know!

TIA.

With much appreciation and even more practice,
