Wendy,

I'm from Baltimore, if that is close enough. The conference was the
absolute best time I have had in many years. I got there in time for the
opening of things on Tues. morning and didn't stop until the close of
Richard Stolzman's performance on Sunday afternoon. Even the fact tht the
hotel was without water on Sunday until almost 10 PM couldn't put a damper
on things. It was almost an exausting experience, there were so many
concerts, lectures and exhibits.

I must say thanks especially to the people in the administrative office.
Because of medical difficulties, I required special parking on campus in
order to attend the conference. The ClarFest folks were most accomodating,
having a special parking permit available on my arrival, with instructions
on how to find all the different parking areas. This was no small feat, as
there is major construction all over campus and parking is at a tremendous
premium. I was able to park right across the street from everything, for
which I am supremely grateful.

Thanks to Mark Charette for the extra fun evening at Donato's, where I met
everyone - Line, who is not a line on the page, but a "Lynn", and Nicholas
Yip who looks like a native American, but so kindly informed me he is
Chinese and Carl Anderson who plays the meanest little D clarinet in the
world. Thanks to Dr. West for the most entertaining choir rehearsals I have
ever been to. It can't be easy to put together folders full of music for
80+ people and decide who is going to play what part without stepping on any
toes. I heard nary a complaint from anyone. I met David Blumberg and Mitch
Bassman and though I know that Lorne Buick and Roger Garrett were there (at
least I was told they were) I was sorry not to meet them. There were many
more whose names I can't recall at this time who were just as interesting to
meet as those whose names I can remember.

The most memorable performance of the conference, at least for me, had to be
Eddie Daniels, Larry Combs and Ricardo Morales all standing on the same
stage and playing jazz together. To share the same air with these people is
enough to knock my socks off. I also heard Dan Paprocki and Jonathon
Cohler, who were very good. Dan stepped in for Dr. Ron Monsen, who was
unable to attend because he had surgery. While I would have enjoyed hearing
him, I certainly was impressed with Dan's presentation.

The displays at the exhibition hall were fabulous. Muncy Winds almost
outdid Buffet with the sheer number of clarinets on display to try. I
played the Buffets, the Yamahas and the LeBlancs. Then I played the Fox
clarinets and Wurlitzers and the Hammerschmidts, which had to be the most
wonderful horns I have ever laid eyes and hands on (also veerrry expensive).
I played Rossis and Patricolas. I tried out Clark Fobes' mouthpieces and
those of Gregory Smith. It was absolutely dizzying and truly wonderful at
the same time. I can't think of when I have had a better time in the last
ten years.
If I have the money next year I will go again (word has it that Sabine Meyer
will be there).

In closing all I can say is if you didn't have the opportunity to attend ,
you missed a dynamite festival. Hats off to Jim Pyne for such a wonderful
week!!

Nancy
