--No, you're right! There's a music store in Fayetteville, Ga. that does
just that--takes the hardware off and paints clarinets, and not in just
those gaudy colors, either--really pretty, subtle colors. The guy does
it mostly for fun and for display, but he sells some of them, and he says
they play great--or, at least not any worse than they did before! I
think it would be fun to have one.
