Hello -

This is to introduce myself as a new member of the mailing list. I'm
learning the clarinet privately, & hope to get qualified as a private music
teacher, if & when I can.

I taught myself the recorder & played viola at school, and got up to a not
very good grade 6 (UK) on it, without being very interested - I did like
orchestra rehearsals, & some music was very satisfying to play, but mostly I
couldn't 'get into' playing & be expressive, & I didn't know how (or why!)
to practise. I stopped playing just after I left school and got a languages
degree & a computing job.

Over the last 10 years I started on piano (I'd always wanted one), restarted
viola, & started violin in that order, playing in a couple of amateur
orchestras. I began to really enjoy it & got more interested in music and
teaching. I finally settled on clarinet last year... I'd had an instrument
for years, but it took a back seat to the others, though I like it just as
much. My technique on any instrument sometimes leaves a lot to be desired
(tho' I've had some intermittent good moments, getting carried away) but I'm
hoping it will improve as I keep at it. Things are going in the right
direction...

Can't do quite as much practice at the moment as I'd like to, due to
illness, but at least I'm reading up on some of the stuff I missed, like
most music theory & history etc. etc., while listening to Radio 3 (UK
classical station) - so I suppose it could be worse!

There's a lot to catch up on (including teaching practice, which I've had
about 2 hours of, very informally!) and I hope I manage it (I won't be able
to spend 24 hours a day on music and I do want to do a couple of other
things too), but whatever eventually happens, it's (partly) what makes me
happy & it's fun trying. (Or at least it's fun when things are going well, &
it's interesting, in an annoying way, when they're not.)

Best wishes to everyone else,
Mary
