mentioned in another post, my Eb plays much better in tune with a Hite
mouthpiece than with the others I have. (David Hite uses this as a selling
point in his website--it's not BS, his Eb mouthpiece is really better in
tune, at least for me). Switching mouthpieces is much cheaper than passing
up the good used horn. >>
Gotcha. I also had a mouthpiece and barrel made (Opperman) just for my Eb
that finished it off into a truely fine horn.
And a very good point on price. I hadn't considered that. My current Bb was
one of four used horns I'd purchased inexpensively over time and had rebuilt.
And as you say, it's of an older serial number series which I prefer to the
newer horns. The horn and the rebuild (including a thick silver plating, hand
made skin pads and an incredible barrel) it all came to under a thousand
dollars and is far, far better than anything I could purchase for triple the
price.
However, it did take some wheeling and dealing to get the person I wanted to
rebuild it and then get the barrel cut. All in all, from buying the horns to
getting this one finished, it took me four years. Patience, I guess {and
research and persistance) are required to go about it this way. But it's what
we love, so it's hardly a drudge.
I love my horns,
Teri Herel.
