Paulette's world view sends a chill down my spine. Sadly, it is a rather
popular view is some academic circles - philosophy, history, etc. It takes
analogies that sound good but are really not, such as the map one, and uses
them to come to totally incorrect conclusions. (Analogies can be very
dangerous if you confuse them with reality) And no amount of evidence to the
contrary will move the true believer because they have set up the catch that
there is no such thing as good evidence (what you see is not necessarily
what I see so...URP!) I'm sure the younger list members hear a lot of this
drivel in school, and I hope they think about it critically. I guess the
proper place to discuss this would be the philosophy list so I won't try to
take apart this view here. Suffice it to say that under close inspection it
is simplistic and irrational.

By the way, the idea that the heart was the center of emotion and thought
goes back at least to the Egyptians, who noted that when you think about
and emotional subject, you feel your heart beat faster and stronger. Good
observation, wrong conclusion, just like Paulette's view (watch out - that's
an analogy). The Egyptians also felt the brain served no useful function -
it was one of the very few organs that was thrown out and not preserved with
the mummy.
