I have both the "First Chair" recording (the original catalog # is ML4629 -
I don't know if a repressing on CD was ever done) and the one that followed
several years later called "First Chair Encores Vol.2." Kenneth's rundown of
soloists on the first recording is correct (including Tabuteau) with the
addition of Samuel Krauss, who was principal trumpet from 1945 to 1958. The
sequel includes DeLancie, Bernard Garfield (still principal) Marilyn
Costello (harp), Charles Owen (percussion), Murray Panitz (flute) and again
Gigliotti, this time playing the Debussy Rhapsody. Herbert Kupferberg
("Those Fabulous Philadelphians") lists Tabuteau as principal from 1915 to
1954 and DeLancie as succeeding him in 1954. Neither of the records has any
indications either of when the recordings were made or when the LP's were
produced, so I don't know first hand who was principal oboe when the first
recording was produced and actually distributed (I wouldn't have bought my
copy until sometime in the early sixties).
