Sorry, but on the basis of nearly 50 years as a musician and 38 years of
teaching music, (6 years in public schools, 32 years in universities) I
can tell you that this doesn't work very well for music students. A
musician can't take two years off from music while they take English and
Philosophy or whatever. At every accredited music school in the United
States, the program for music majors includes four years of music,
beginning which the freshman year.

Often, people indiscriminately recommend a junior college for any and
every student, but while the concept is attractive for certain students
and certain majors, the study of music just doesn't work that way.

Musicians, more than almost any other students, must be thoroughly
immersed in the study of their major subject from the beginning of their
academic careers. They have to study music theory, music literature and
history, performance, ensembles, and other areas, and this just can't be
stuffed into the third and fourth years of a college curriculum. There
are other factors, such as the need for a musician to learn from
interaction and competition with other musicians.

If you can find a two year institution which has a rigorous and thorough
program in music, then a transfer to a four year institution is possible
for some majors within the field of music, but not all.
