Subj: [kl] Development of the Lack Vibrato on Clarinet

It seems to be the tradition for clarinetists playing pre-20th-century works
to not use vibrato, even though it is used in just about every other
instrument (when was the last time you heard a Mozart Flute concerto played
without any vibrato?). I am not going to debate whether or not this is a
valid way of playing, I am just curious if anyone has any insights as to how
or why this tradition has developed.
