Back in my young ignorant years as a hight school clarinetist, I only used standard Rico Reeds. I was using
number 4's at the time. My mother would get them for me for 25 cents a piece or five for a dollar. I didn't know
anything about reed care other than shaving a little of the back with a razor blade, if it was to heavy; or having
my teacher clip it when it got to soft. At one time, during a tuning session in an All State Band, the conductor stopped
when I played my tuning note and said, "That's what a Clarinet should sound like". I was also using a stock
mouthpiece. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. I did keep my mouthpiece clean and would not play on broken reeds.
