I'll wager the frazzled tip came from improper handling of the reed. That
and the crud in the mouthpiece will happen even with the most wonderful,
expensive, and well-adjusted Vandoren. But that is one of the main
reasons for having multiple reeds, even of the same brand, available. That
way you can feel and hear the difference between reeds and learn to select
what works and what doesn't.
