What kind of reeds should a beginner star on? Should They get a better
quality reed at a softer strength or should they just go for the cheap
stuff at the beginning? Would a better brand be easier for them to play
on? Should I adjust them as well?

I believe that beginners especially need good reeds right from the
beginning. The strength needs to be selected based on the student's needs.
Fifth graders might find a 2 1/2 Mitchell Lurie or a Vandoren 2 suitable.
An adult beginner might need to start a little bit higher.

The need for adjustment will vary. Cheap reeds actually are more in need
of adjustment than good reeds. If you don't want to get into reed
adjusing, the Mitchell Luries can almost always be played without any at
all if the strength is correctly selected. However, many people (and I am
one of them) find these reeds to have a relatively short life but others do
fine with them. This is what I have selected for my daughter. The
Vandoren would also be fine. In the proper strength, they will need less
adjusment than the bottom of the line, plain Ricos.
