Subj: [kl] An enjoyable afternoon ...
Date: Fri, 3 Jul 1998 00:15:43 -0400

It's midnight, and I just arrived back home from an enjoyable afternoon with
Francois Kloc of Buffet-Crampon. My son's Bb Festival had an unrepairable
top joint (a crack ended up going all the way to the bore), so Francois
replaced it, matching a new top joint to the bottom joint, and then
adjusting the joints so the tonality and intonation matched. The upper joint
pads are now cork; Francois feels the brightness added by the cork pads is
offset by the absorption of the soft Gore-Tex pads on the lower joint,
making the clarinet more even in sound. He also a bit of work on my son's A;
the top joint bore didn't quite match the bottom joint, making the A stuffy.
He also changed register tubes in the A. My son's playing them again right
now; it's like having a new set of clarinets.

It's amazing watching a consummate professional do their job, with minute
changes bringing out new character in an instrument. I wish I personally
owned a Buffet just so I could watch Francois work on another :)
