Dear listers:
I need some advice. I am working with a community band, and last year we
started what I hope to be an annual tradition: In addition to our regular
concerts, we did an afternoon chamber music concert with many members of
the band. They got together to rehearse 1 hour prior to regular rehearsals,
and each group then performed 3 to 4 pieces on the program. I feel that it
was good for the members because it gave them a chance to experience music
in a different way, and I believe that it has helped strengthen the band as
a whole.
My problem is this: I need a bunch of suggestions for next years program! I
don't want the groups to repeat music and I have already exuasted my
knowledge or repertiore for the various ensembles. The types of groups we
had last year were:
Saxophone Quartet (AATB)
Clarinet Quartet (SSSB)
Brass Quartet (3 Tpts, Tba)
Flute Quartet & Flute Choir
I could just open up any catalogue and order music, but my budget is
somewhat limited. My priority is that the music be of high musical quality.
It should be fairly accessible for the players, I would rather they spend a
good amount of time in rehearsal working on ensemble things rather than
fingering things (but of course, the music should not too easy!). I would
also like to see some different configurations for this year, so any
combination of instruments is fair game. Our resources are roughly:
Plenty of clarinets (+ bass), flutes (+ 2 altos!) and trumpets
Saxes: AATTB
1 or 2 bassoons, depending
1 or 2 horns, depending
3 trombones
1 euphonium
unfortunately, no oboe and our tuba can't do it this year
2 percussionists - 1 with good mallet chops (I would love to find some
things for them to do!)
SORRY for this l-o-o-o-ng post! But the gaps in my knowledge on this
subject are many and impressive in scope!
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer us!
