Baermann and Berlioz

In Berlioz's memoirs there are frequent references to how good the
German clarinet players were.

It is possible that the difference in style of embouchure may have had
something to differentiate between the Germans and the French players.

The French players, possibly with the old style of playing with the reed
upwards and the Germans playing with the reed downwards.

Baermann in his Clarinet Method advocated using the "down" method to
get a better sound.

The only mention there is of Baermann in Berlioz's memoirs is where
Berlioz says:
" I would have liked to go Munich but a letter from Baermann informed
me that my concerts in Munich would have to wait for a month"

Apparently Baermann in Munich was more than just a first clarinet.

Anyway, they never did meet. What a pity! It would have been wonderful
to read what Berlioz had to say about his playing!
