Last night on public television, there was a show on the Israel
Philharmonic and they rehearsed and played only one work: Till
Eulenspiegel which, for those of you who have not played it, is
a marvellous orchestral work out, particularly in the clarinet
section.

So the IPO's clarinet players were given a great deal of TV
exposure, except for the second clarinet player who was not
hilighted in any particular way.

Wonderful players, all of them. The first clarinet player is
very classy. The E-flat looked like "Lurch" from the Adams
family, but played very well. The bass player was very effective
but it appeared to me that he was too intrusive with his very
large sound, or else he was playing too loudly.

Fine orchestra. Good performance. The rehearsal was fun
to watch because it showed that even an orchestra of this
magnitude can have little bits and pieces of troubles here
and there that have to be straightened out. Mehta was the
soul of diplomacy in fixing things.

Terrific piece!!! Eulenspiegel was always one of my
favorites.
