Subj: [kl] DeFranco's Hanon book
Date: Fri, 26 Jun 1998 17:00:21 -0400

Buddy DeFranco has a book called "Hand in Hand With Hanon," reworkings for
clarinet of old piano(?) exercises. Reports I've heard or read suggest
it's a major contribution to pedagogical literature for the instrument.

Does anyone out there know the book? If so, is it as good as I've heard,
and how would you classify it in terms of "level"?

I'm asking this because I've been at work, or TRYING to work, while
listening to "You Must Believe In Swing," the 1997 CD DeFranco made with
Dave McKenna. It makes me redefine what "age" is supposed to mean.
DeFranco is what--75, 76? His playing on this recording is staggering. He
really DOES play the clarinet the way Charlie Parker played the alto: for a
change, one of those clich=E9s of recent music history seems to hold up
absolutely.

He can play, but can he teach?:-)
