I used to use the Collis before I used the Galper Method. Now I use Galper,
and supplement with Collis (sometimes) . I can tell you stories about the
Elkan Publishing business that will make you cringe (they no longer pay
their royalties for books sold). I know this because I teach the daughter
of the Hegviks (co-authors on the back cover of the Collis books, and
played in a Quintet with Robin Hegvik), they haven't been paid by Elkan
Publisher in years! Gives me a bad taste for the book. Tempted to
photocopy it, and send $3 to James Collis myself ;)

My favorite beginning method books for clarinet are the MODERN COURSE FOR
CLARINET by James Collis. They are published by Henri Elkan. They come
in about six volumes and I usually use the first three or four. They
have lots and lots of "tunes". The only unfortunate thing are the rather
"dorky" titles given to the tunes. I find these method books far
superior to any band method -- and the fact that nobody else uses them
around here is also a plus for me.
