+AHw-I am a novice clarinet teacher, and I was hoping to get some input from
+AHw-the list regarding what kind of music to start a new student on,
+AHw-particularly those with one or two years experience. This is the kind of
+AHw-stuff they really don't teach the music ed majors. Also, what kind of
+AHw-method is the most helpful to one just developing technique.

My suggestion, and this is only from the way I was taught, is to start off
with familiar songs and music. Things, not +ACI-Mary Had a little lamb+ACI-, but
theme songs to +ACI-I Love Lucy+ACI- or a revised edition of +ACI-Star Wars+ACI-, Lots of
Parades which, in the most part, are fairly easy. This way, I, and I'm sure
others, were able to focus on their playing style and techniques instead of
how to play the unfamiliar piece.

Also, this is a question I've been wanting to ask. When I started playing
back in '90 when I was just 8, I was taught for all of the first year, to
only play with my left hand and use my right hand's index and thumb to hold
onto the thumb rest and hold it as we only use the thumb normally. I was
wondering if many others do this for their young students. This is obviously
a very bad handling in general to be teaching students, especially young
students, and I'm just glad that I was able to make the transition into
proper handling of the instrument easily, but I had friends give it up
because it was hard to change the work they had made in the year, and if
many teahcers do it this way, I question why.
