First of all, I am also a graduate of UF. I have a degree in Music
Performance. Just so you know UF is now a school of Music not a department.
Second of all I missed the first question, but for undergraduate work UF is
perfect. Great theory department and nice people. The performing ensembles
may not be the best, but the experience you get by playing the music is more
important. As and undergrad. at a small school, you will be able to play a
lot more than at your counterpart bigger school say FSU. There are no grad.
students to contend with so you learn to be a solo player by being a solo
player, not by competing with older and wiser students with much more
experience. (IE doc and Grads.) There are many great schools out there but
think of what kind of experience you want, what kind of player you are, and
what kind of teacher you need. With these questions you should be able to
decide what kind of school you want to go to. You should not rule out small
schools just because they are small think about what you as the student want.
I wanted to play and that's what I got. Principle clarinet in Orchestra for 4
years, top wind ensemble(we rotated chairs), and I premiered "New" music every
year for our various composers. Plus I got to play in a local Community
Orchestra for money in my spare time. I wouldn't give a second thought to
going to UF if I had the chance to do it over.
