I have been in the orchestra pit at Wagner's opera house at Bayreuth, (I
have a photograph of myself sitting in the principal bassoonist's chair),
and if memory serves correctly, the configuration you describe above is
exactly how the orchestra there sits today. (b cl behind picc)
