To a query several weeks ago to the effect of "What is Karaoke," I remarked
that I wasn't sure if Karaoke referred specifically to singing along with
a pre-recorded orchestral accompaniment and that to extend it to mean
"instrumentalist playing along" might be incorrect. Literally "Karaoke" means
"empty bucket" according to a Japanese correspondent of mine but the
current usage also allows the meaning that we all know and love.
In any case, I asked my correspondent to give me his best guess for
a new word which means "Instrumentalist playing along," and he proposed
"Banso", so I'm using it advisedly, but fully prepared to drop it if
it turns out to be redundant or worse, incorrect.
