I think that now would be the perfect time to purchase an A
clarinet. Having one in my Youth Orchestra experience really was
invaluable. I am very happy that I did have access to someone that let
me borrow theirs before I bought one, since it gave me more time to
acquaint myself with the unique intonation and feel. I would caution
you, however, to make _quality_ the dominant factor in your decision
(with price, of course, a secondary factor.) (Not all of us are rolling
around in money, especially while in high school. If you do have the
money to play with, then certainly go for the quality as the sole
factor.) Don't make the mistake of buying a poor A clarinet because you
don't think you will use it very often. You will probably surprise
yourself.
Good luck in your orchestral pursuits!
