I would say that if you can afford one, then now would be a perfect time to
get one!

I myself wait until I get enough jobs on a horn to become too frustrated with
trying to borrow horns... You need to sound good on a job and you can't let a
bad horn be the cause. Also, owning the instrument lets you practice it and
know all of its little tuning and response quirks.

(Right now it's not going to take many more jobs for me to purchase a bass!
Borrowing basses is frightening at best...)
