You can get R. Kell recordings on V. Soames' Clarinet Classics label. I
don't like his vibrato, though--too over the top.

I heard a story (perhaps even true?) that Harold Wright used a nice vibrato
when he started w/ the BSO--but had to stop to keep his job.

I use vibrato on clarinet (so shoot me). I also use it on saxophone.
Definitely NOT the same thing. On clarinet, it is a much more subtle thing,
or people will throw stuff at you. All diaphragm, no jaw. On sax,
diaphragm will do--and if it's society music, you can wobble away at will.

Yes I have heard several pieces played by Reginald Kell and he has
excellent use of the vibrato! It really brings out the sound in the
lower notes. I love the Saint-Saens Sonate that he played, as I think I
may have mentioned before somewhere. I was wondering about his vibrato
as I have never heard much in clarinet playing before. The tape
recording I have was taped by my director for me from an incredibly old
record so there is a lot of background noise and the record skipped a
few times, so I would like to find a recording of this on a CD...
I agree that you should wait to first produce good tone before worrying
about vibrato on a clarinet. I think I read an article or something
somewhere that said that the clarinet is one of the only members of the
orchestra that does not widely use vibrato.
I have a hard time producing vibrato from any of the methods commonly
used but I bet that if I learned it would help my sax playing a little
bit (although lately I have given up on that)....
