All this discussion on vibrtato, well... I'm going to say it!
Vibrato is a technique, just like any other; and it deserves to be
taught. Many people may not like the sound of vibrato on clarinet; but many
do! Vibrato is an integral part of sax, violin, and cello playing; yet many
people do not like the sound of it on those instruments. I think it should
be up to the student to make a choice of wether or not he likes the sound of
vibrato!
It's time that we clarinettist begin to accept that everyone has a
different style and a different view of what is beautiful... But we should
also learn when it is appropriate to apply your individual style; whatever
it may be!!! Once, in my younger days (:-}) I made a descision (one that I
might not make today) to use vibrato on a certain section of KV.622; and I
was relegated to a rating of "excellent" instead of "superior" for this!
Then on another occasion; I chose not to use vibrato in a very slow lyrical
passage (I can't remember the name of the piece) and was criticized (Not
marked down; just criticized) for NOT using vibrato. In other words, the
clarinet community as a whole needs to accept more than one viewpoint...
But until that day arrives; be careful when and where you apply different
styles.
