Hmmm. . .

I adore Arturo Sandoval's playing. He is fantastic. The one "classical"
album he has is, other than the Arutunian concerto (which works well), not a
stunning success IMHO.

Mr. Sandoval is--no question--a bravura player. The Arutunian sounds great
with that approach, the Haydn & Hummel less so.

I recall an interview in the Instrumentalist some years ago, whence one
Adolph Herseth described playing in a dance band as where he developed
strong chops. (I also believe that in the same article he described none
other than Maynard Ferguson as "the greatest brass player of this century").
I know that Phil Smith does recording gigs. The point here is that the
"crossover" may (a) not be such a recent thing and (b) more prevalent than
we think.

Musicians need to eat. Prior to the big orchestra gig, the ones I know tend
to take all gigs where money is paid.

Apparently the trumpeter Arturo Sandoval is another one who "transitions"
easily between jazz and classical repertoire. I've not heard him play, but
I gather he does both "sides" wonderfully. The crossover phenomenon seems
to be relatively recent. Russo I think goes back quite a long way in the
business; guys like Sandoval, W. Marsalis, and Daniels are much younger.
