Regarding this topic, check out recordings by Chris Potter and Mike
Marcus, they use vibrato on bass clarinet in jazz, wonderfully.
Potter's recording of September Song is unbelievably beautiful. Also,
Paul McCandless uses this vibrato on bass clarinet.

The bass clarinet does not suffer from vibrato as easily as does
soprano, it does not get nanny-goatish, vibrato works well on it
indeed. Just as it does for Yo-Yo Ma's cello--and Isaac Stern's violin.

Regarding the teacher, his comment was doctrinaire, but too strong. Has
he ever heard the clarinet solo in Pines of Rome played REALLY well,
some vibrato is SO wonderful here.

Regarding your comment of never having heard a clarinet album, well,
this is a touchy listserv and you are to be applauded for trying to
learn, so I'll just suggest that you turn on a radio or visit the
library. Nothing expands your intellect like opening your mind.

That last comment, by the way, could apply to vibrato-less
clarinettists....
