The difference we are discussing is between musicianship and technical
facility. If a teacher is a good MUSICIAN on one instrument, that
knowledge can be carried over to teaching other instruments, even if the
technical skills are weak on those other instruments. No one expects a
school band director to be a virtuoso on every instrument, but it is
assumed (right or wrong) that s/he will know MUSIC, and enough basic skills
on the other instruments to get kids off to a good start. Private lessons
are in order for those with the talent and ambition to proceed beyond the
director's level. Technique is where the private instructor can be most
beneficial. But any true MUSICIAN should be able to teach MUSICIANSHIP to
those with the ability to learn it (and I think many CANNOT learn it).

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
