Klarinet Archive - Posting 000620.txt from 1998/06
From: Michael Morse <mmorse@-----.CA> Subj: [kl] Re: Interloper's Query Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 23:35:01 -0400
Greetings to all you wood-windy folks from a double bassist undercover.
I just joined the list today, for the express purpose of asking for your
help and suggestions. I've been commissioned to write a brief article for
a popular music encyclopedia on the clarinet in popular music, and also a
slightly longer one on woodwind instruments generally.
I can hear the gnashing of teeth and the furrowing of eyebrows, or at
least I think I do. But I'm writing for your help because I don't want to
get it wrong--and if anyone can prevent that, y'all can.
I'm not asking for the research part of it, which I will do as
diligently as my September deadline permits. What I would appreciate is
your thoughts. What, to you, is important about the clarinet in pop music?
What are some facts that a non-clarinetist might overlook? What
temptations should I avoid? (I've already decided not to make the whole
thing about Irving Fazola's performance of "My Inspiration," but it was
close thing.)
Thanks in advance for all suggestions.
MWM
