The choice of doing a work as glorious as the Brahms Quintet with
piano, or not doing it at all in the absence of a string quartet
is always a difficult one. I think you should do the work and get
experience at it even if accompanied by accordions. But the texture
will be so very much altered by piano accompaniment that what you
will play is a very pale echo of the work. Now how is that for
ponderously stating the obvious.

Of particular difficulty will be the second movement with all of
its gypsy nuances. But I wish you well in any event.

I don't know if the Brahms is available in a piano reduction so
it is not as if I were speaking about having heard the work in this
altered form.

I am curious to know who said that the Mozart quintet with piano
is a favorable combination (not exactly what you said, but close)?
Such an opinion needs something more than an assertion of quality,
don't you think?
