I've been watching all this talk about Wood clarinets for students and all.
I'm a high school student, and I thought I'd voice my thoughts... I've been
playing for almost 5 years, and I've always been stuck with this el cheapo
Bundy Resonite. Just recently, I was able to borrow some kind of Selmer and a
Normandy 4 (both wood) clarinets from the school! I felt a BIG improvement
over what I was already playing....and the instructor is enforcing getting a
better clarinet if possible. Now I know all this stuff about taking care of
the instrument. Yes, I broke an upper segment (you know, the top-most segment
with keys) almost completely in half from accidently dropping it...but
accidents do happen. I'm sure if I owned a wooden clarinet, I would be
persuaded to take better care of it....especially after having used and broke
a plastic one (fortunately it's fixed). But maybe it's just a matter of how
serious a player you are. I'd love to just try out some better clarinets just
to see how they feel and how I sound on one. But not everyone is like that,
and a few people want the best and don't take care of it. I think it's best
to have experience with lower and work up....but you have to be able to get
reward out of it....and be able to see results. It never crossed my mind that
I needed a wooden one until the instructor said we needed new ones. Even my
mouthpiece! I have a Bundy, and it never crossed my mind to buy a new one,
until good ol' instructor said, "It's sound better if you had a better mouth
piece. How about a B-45?" I was like....whoa! I just think it's best if you
use a student model instrument to get an idea...learn how to play fairly well,
and then work up. Unless you're determined and have moolah....Just my
thoughts for thinking about. :P
