About four months ago, I asked if anyone on the list knew about the hand-
notated band transcription of the overture to Wagner's Flying Dutchman. I
thought it would be polite of me to summarize my findings.

Several folks suggested that the transcriptions were done by Dr Mark Hindsley,
one-time director of bands at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
This turned out to be exactly correct. Dr Hindsley's transcriptions are now
being managed by his son, Robert Hindsley. The catalog is quite impressive,
amounting to transcriptions of some 70 or 80 orchestral works. The prices are
quite reasonable, amounting to little more than copying charges. The list
includes works by Bach, Beethoven, Borodin, Brahms, Debussy, Dvorak, Handel,
Moussorgsky, Ravel, Saint-Saens, Sousa, R. Strauss, Tschaikowsky, Wagner and
Weber. After ordering a half-dozen scores to review, I've decided to get the
Flying Dutchman and Beethoven's Egmont Overture for our community band.

If you're involved with a band and having a hard time finding challenging
literature, I suggest you contact Robert for a catalog:

My thanks to those of you who pointed me in the right direction. Klarinet has
never let me down!
