I have a feeling that your band experience must be limited - there is a
lot of fantastic writing out there that exists. While band music doesn't
get the public exposure that (ancient) orchestral works do, some of it is
nonetheless great. Symphony No 1: The Lord of the Rings by Johann De Meij
and March Op. 99 by Prokofiev are band works on my Top 5 of all time.

Every genre of music has it's lemons. Orchestral music has just as many
"songs" as band music. You just never hear anyone play it these days.
