I think the usage came from being in a choir. They sing songs.
Many times pupils would come with the "song" bit and I'd get a bit
annoyed at the wrong term for, lets say, the Weber Concertino.
I got used to it and as long as they can play the "song" well, let them
think that.I ask them to call it a piece.
