I can suggest two works, "Sixtuor" by Jean Francaix, for the same
instrumentation as the Janacek, ww quintet + bass clarinet, and
"Divertimento" by Alfred Uhl, for three Bb clarinets + bass clarinet.
As to your, "Not too avant-garde" parameter, these things are in the ears
of the beholder. The Francaix is typical of Francaix and has fast,
difficult sections. The most difficult for me was the rhythm in a fast 5/8
section. The Uhl probably has easier rhythms and notes and is, to me,
reminiscent of Hindemith.
