Grant, I find greater ease in this if you use the R3 key as well

WHat this does is open the other register mechanism, which is easier to
play the altissimo in, IMO. I can play up to C above C, relatively easily
and in tune by keeping that key down. I use the same fingerings as Bb
clarinet, a trick I don't do so well on regular bass, mind you. ^_^
