I have not used a "purple box" (standard) Vandoren in years. (You can prob.
tell because they no longer come in purple boxes?) The consistency
described below is evident in their V12 reed, which is superior.

I use Vandoren #4 and Mitchel Lurie #5, and find them to be similar.
The Mitchels seem to be more consistent strengths throughout the box,
and you can usually take one, wet it, slap it on, and play. They are
great for rehearsals, practicing etc., but as has been mentioned, they
tend to wear out pretty fast - they get soft and stuffy.

The Vandorens, on the other hand, seem to be wildly inconsistent - from
box to box and even in the same box - but when you find a good one, it
is worth it!!!. The sound is full and woody, and they seem to last a
long time, even may get better with age. They take longer to break in,
though.

The WW&BW master catalog has some great charts in there - comparing
mouthpiece facings, reed strengths, etc - that make it real easy to
compare among different brands. If you don't have their catalog, you
should get it (I have no association with them, I just like the great
extra stuff in their catalog). You could probably order a catalog from
their web site "www.wwandbw.com" or call them (800) 348-5003. Be sure
to ask for the MASTER CATALOG.

Hope this info helps somebody out there!
