Yes - but it is not just a "Romantic virtuoso showpiece" - it is a
concerto by Weber. Putting music in pigeon holes and then assuming it has
the concomitant stereotypical characteristics seems to me to be following
the wrong path, barking up the wrong tree, etc., etc.
We had a controversy on this list just after I first joined about the
tempo
for the final polonaise movement of this concerto, and quite a few people
agreed that it was often played inappropriately fast.
