C'mon guys.......the throat register uses approx. 1/6 of the bore of any bass
clarinet. Assuming your throat tone keys open far enough (too close and you an
get a hissing sound) the quality of the tone is far more dependent on the
reed/mouthpiece/ligature set-up. If your throat tones sound bad.......check
your set-up.

Really, throat tones on the bass can be rich and full.....God knows Wagner
used them a lot.....and he was no slouch as an orchestrator.
