I'm not sure if altruism and gratitude are the main motivation. Companies are
smart. They realize that institutional funds are limited. BUT teachers (and, I
suppose, the military) have enormous influence on what students buy presently
and in the future. This is why computer companies give educational discounts
(they do extend them to teachers, though). At one time, Apple was virtually
giving away computers to the schools. Guess what most kids talked their
parents into buying? In that particular example, I think the system worked
well. I have made a living working primarily with Apple Computers for the past
16 years ;-)

As for a teacher's wheeling and dealing a discount by misusing school
letterhead, I believe it is fraud. Teachers should be committed to TRUTH, not
TRICKERY. If an instrument is NOT worth $X to you (because it won't play any
"melody" in its life--when did this become a criterion for anything?), don't
sell your soul. Shades of Dr. Faustus?
