<< I've been told that harmonic series has a lot to do with why animals
bark, bray, etc. at the sound of a clarinet. I guess they are used to
hearing everything built on octaves. I know that when I was a little
kid, the dog would never even bark at my sax playing, but howled away at
my older sister's clarinet playing. This kind of makes me wonder what
they're hearing that we don't...

Maybe THAT'S what's going on! My dog will come running from wherever he is in
the house whenever I play to sit at my feet (sometimes ON them) and howl at
the top of his lungs. Presumably he thinks he's singing along - if the sound
hurt his ears, wouldn't he go hide somewhere? He completely ignores the rest
of the family playing violin, trumpet, trombone, piano, or drums - only my
students and I are treated to unsolicited dog duets. I tell my students if
they can concentrate through a lesson at my house, nothing will ever faze them
on a performance! We kick him out of the studio, of course, but he always
tries to sneak back. Strangely enough, he never "sings" when my husband (his
primary trainer) is home. I always wondered why he only responded to clarinet
playing; maybe this harmonic series thing is the answer - do you suppose it
actually MEANS something to him? - Susan
