Subj: [kl] Please help me / Chalumeau / clarion

I have read a publication about the clarinet, with an informative
section on clarinet registers. As Lee said, there is no "standard" for
register names, but this list should give you an idea of what people are
talking about when they use the names.

Chalumeau - E to F#
Throat tones - G to Bb
Clarion - B to C (above the staff)
High - C# to G
Altissimo - G# to C (or higher)

Bill, you forgot the throat tones! They are different from the
chalumeau in a big way, as they are produced from the top "throat" of
the clarinet. You are right about the origin of chalumeau. High and
altissimo I am not sure need to be distinguished, but does anyone know
why they are? I am thinking maybe they are produced differently/from
different parts of the clarinet?

Clarion is named for the ancient trumpet, the clarion, which had a
shrill, clear sound similar to this register of the clarinet. When the
clarinet was first invented people hearing it said it sounded "like a
small clarino," hence the name "clarinet" and the register "clarion."

This is not an "official" list, but useful in communicating notes to be
played. Bill, you did a good job, but simply saying chalumeau, clarion,
and altissimo is kind of broad for the wide range of notes and registers
on an instrument like the clarinet. For all intents and purposes it was
fine. I know I'm being picky. :-P Most of this is quoted from a book.
