Chris,
The Selmer rosewood BBb contras are nice, but the bore is huge, thus
making it a bit more difficult to play technical passages than the
Leblanc BBb
Selmer BBb contra bore is 1.333" !
Leblanc is 1.182, which is huge anyway
Both instruments are a nightmare for repairmen.
The Leblanc low C horn is 47" tall, being wrapped, and the Selmer
Rosewood is six feet tall since it is straight.
Take a look at mine on my web site. I don't yet have a pic of my Leblanc
BBb contra on there, but there are catalog scans to help you out. The
site very much under construction and there isn't a lot there yet.
...Actually there isn't a color picture of the Leblanc low C, but there
is a black and white at the top of the page. I'll eventually get a pic
of mine (#571) on there.
By the way, Leblanc BBb contras do not have right hand trill keys above
the Eb key, but the Selmer does. I have found that the most annoying
thing about this is the missing alternate Bb.
The only Leblanc contra that has the trill keys is the curved low C
Eb contra.
Leblanc contras are now nickel plated and the Selmer has silver plated
keys.
Oh, and yes, you can get a Selmer for a tad less than 20 grand. Even
less if you could get it through a school with their discount!
hope this helps, and feel free to email me with any questions.
