The lowest, or chalumeau, register is named for an early instrument, a
precursor of the clarinet, which played in that range and did not have a
register key. Clarion defines the middle register (above the "break").
Altissimo is the highest register (C# and up). Note the root word "alto"
meaning "high" and "issimo" (just like in fortissimo) meaning "very."
These names, seem to apply pretty much exclusively to clarinet. They are
not, except for altissimo, commonly used for saxophone, for example.
