The Vandorens run a little harder than the Mitchell Lurie. The 3 1/2 Vandoren
will feel more like a #4 in the Mitchell Lurie. Different brands of reeds suit
different
people. I use both the Vandoren (in a 3 1/2) and Mitchell Lurie (in a 4). For
me,
the Mitchell Luries need almost no breaking in but have a shorter life span.

Perhaps your teacher's objective is to move up in strength? While one doesn't
want
go overboard on stiffness, the stiffer reed will give your altissimo a better
sound and
you will be less likely to get into the bad habit of "pinching" to get up to
pitch in
the altissimo.
