+AHw-rather fuzzy one, at that) of our dear Claude with some clarinet...at
+AHw-first I rejoiced+ADs- it appeared that the Ingenious Impressionist was holding
+AHw-God's instr...uh, a bass clarinet. But...upon further inspection, it
+AHw-appeared to be a bit...thin to be a bass. Not just the body, but the neck
+AHw-and what is visible of the mouthpiece. Was Debussy a bassist (oh,
+AHw-rejoice, heart of mine+ACE-)? Or is that a basset horn of the day? Or were
+AHw-basses (or clarinets in general) thinner, or perhaps had thinner walls?

I'm pretty sure it was a basset horn. I've seen a picture (actually it was
the first picture I had seen of one) of one that had the body that looked
like that of an alto clarinet and the neck of a bass clarinet. Only later,
did I realize that that wasn't the norm for bassets.
