I had a student start out on a metal clarinet. I was shocked, since I have
never seen one that played. It was a Noblet, and it wasn't oo bad. The
intonation was consistent. the throat tones were on the weak side, however.
I didn't think one would be able to play really loud and project on metals
(don't ask me why I had any reasoning - it was just a hunch), but this horn
did project and had volume. I wish I had bought it from him to add to my
little collection, but he sold it when I helped him purchase a wooden horn.
Finances were a major concern, so I helped him pick out a horn. He bought a
brand new Normandy from the Woodwind and the Brasswind with an Ignstius N.
Gennusa mouthpiece, Rovner Light ligature, and Grand Concert Reeds 3.25
(although as soon as he finishes his supply, we will have to buy the Select
3.5 or 3). Well, now that I've stryed off topic more than slightly....
I also had another student bring in a METAL REED! I could not get that thing
to play at all! Anyone have any information on why someone would be crazy
enough to make a metal reed?
