In a magazine interview, Harold Wright once said that the ligature was
extremely important--without one, your thumb gets really tired holding the
reed on!

I usually replace the screw with a less worn one from an old, junk ligature
of the same general type. If you don't have one, you can probably get a
screw free from a music store or repair shop, where they have drawers full
of old stuff.

For what it's worth, a month or so ago on one of the lists, someone said
that Harold Wright bought a new Bonade inverted ligature each year, because
they tended to stretch out and lose resilience. Kal Opperman told me the
same thing.

I wonder if string also loses it.
